Demand for small-sized materials is recently increased in the field of advance medical instruments and micromachines, and therefore, the austenitic stainless steel wires used for such devices are required to be down-sized without losing their mechanical properties. However, it has been reported that the yield stress and the total elongation in the as-annealed wire are markedly decreased when the diameter (D) is reduced to a comparable level of the grain size (d) (D/d<5)). On the other hand, since the austenitic stainless steel wire is often used after drawing without annealing (as-drawn wire), it would be important to understand the effect of initial D/d before drawing for controlling mechanical properties of the wire. In this study, the relation between the initial D/d and the tensile properties was investigated for as-drawn austenitic stainless steel wires.
