We have reported that the grain size control is very important for metallic thin wire because its mechanical properties, such as yield strength and elongation, are markedly deteriorated when the number of grains existing in wire diameter direction is below 5. In this study, we focused on the grain refinement technique for metastable austenitic steel by means of a reversion of deformation-induced martensite to austenite. It has been reported that ultra fine-grained austenite can be obtained by reversion treatment after severe cold rolling. This procedure was applied to metastable austenitic steel thin wire, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the fine-grained thin wire was investigated.
