Recent times have seen a rise in ocean and coastal reclamation activities. Coastal reclamation requires superior-quality material for the construction of reclamation ground. However, securing such superior-quality material is difficult because of factors such as their depletion, price rise, and environmental preservation. Marine clay available near coastal reclamation sites can be used to overcome this problem. However, the construction of reclamation ground using marine clay is a time-consuming process because it involves sedimentation and self-weight consolidation. Thus, industrial by-products and chemicals are used as coagulants to minimize this time. However, using a coagulant increases slurry production and transportation costs. Therefore, using an accelerated sedimentation method is preferred because it does not require the use of a coagulant and can thus shorten the ground build-up time. Recent research on accelerating sedimentation using kinetic electricity indicates that kinetic electricity could be used in the sedimentation and self-weight consolidation process. Therefore, in this study, we developed a nanocoated plastic drain board (PDB), i.e., an electrode using nanotechnology. The nanocoated PDB was applied to the sedimentation and self-weight consolidation process for coastal reclamation. The results validated that sedimentation velocity, the coefficient of sedimentation, and the self-weight consolidation process changed because of the applied voltage. A nanocoated PDB could thus be used in the sedimentation and self-weight consolidation process for coastal reclamation.
