Nine rape lines (including 2 standards) were evaluated for cold hardiness in freeze tests and in the field at 3 Kansas locations in 1993. Significant differences between lines were obtained in both freeze and field tests. Significant correlations were found between freeze test LT50 (time at which 50% of plants were killed at -9degC) and field survival index (FSI) (r = 0.90), LT50 and percentage survival in the field (r = 0.92), percentage survival in the freeze test and percentage survival in the field (r = 0.86) and percentage survival in the freeze test and FSI (r = 0.83). The potential of this freeze test in selection for cold tolerance is highlighted.
