Sarah raven's cutting patch: Half-hardy ad tender flowers

By May, when the danger of frost in my Sussex garden has past, I can plant out all the tender young plants that have been waiting indoors. I've got lots of half-hardy annuals, such as love lies bleeding (Amaranthus). Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis), the cup and saucer vine (Cobaea scandens) and Cosmos bipinnatus 'Purity' - all six weeks old and ready to roll. I also have pots of dahlias and chrysanths. And itXtime to start off those half-hardy annuals, such as zinnias, that prefer to be sown directly outdoors. These plants will take up the baton from the hardy annuals, such as sweet peas, Ammi majus and marigolds, which will start to fade in a few months' time.
