The independent US refiner will spend $2.0B to 2020 to integrate its 451K-b/d Galveston Bay and 84K-b/d Texas City refineries in Texas into one large 585K-b/d complex, which would be the second largest refinery in the country once the project is completed. Marathon Petroleum Corp. said the project will include construction of a new ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) hydrotreater to allow for the production of 65K b/d of ULSD; the revamping of a heavy crude unit that will add 40K b/d of capacity and boost distillates and gas oil output; and upgrading a 70K-b/d resid hydrotreater to 90K b/d to allow for an increase in residual crude processing at the plant. Marathon CEO Gary Heminger said that he expects diesel demand to grow worldwide over the coming years, and the ability to produce 100% ULSD will present more export opportunities for the company.
