Chinese Coal Exports Go Below Previous Year For 5 Years In Row

As reported before, coal exports of China in the calendar year 2008 remained 45,430,000 MT, down 7,760,000 MT (14.6 percent) from the previous calendar year. In consequence, coal exports of this country fell down as compared with the previous year for five years in a row since 2004 after the peak of 93,927,000 MT marked in 2003. The long lasting stagnation of coal exports from China could be ascribed to the strategical regulations introduced by the government with the objective of meeting with rapidly rising demand in the domestic market reflecting high economical growth. In effect, the government of this country abolished all the favorable treatments for coal exports while imposing export tax over coal exports.
