France - volume gives way to quality

The import figures of raw cotton in France in the season of 1960/61 indicates slightly more than 300,000 tons equaling 1,360,000 bales. Some 45 percent of these imports -- about 600,000 bales -- came from the United States. In 1960, about 30 cotton merchants were established in Le Havre, and the Le Havre Arbitration Board had the privilege to have a permanent American Classer appointed by ACSA. In the season ended just imports of raw cotton in France, totaled about 500,000 bales with unfortunately anegligible share for U.S. cotton. France is not the only European country to face such drastic changes. The cotton industry of Great Britain had been far more important in the past and is now the biggest loser in Europe and in the world.
