Sulfonylureas use first-line should be reconsidered

USE of sulfonylureas as first-line monotherapy for type 2 diabetes should be reconsidered, say epidemiologists from Cardiff who have reported an observational study showing increased mortality compared with metformin monotherapy. The study, reported last week at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Barcelona, used data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink to compare all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes given first-line sulfonylureas with deaths in patients given metformin.
