National recognition for insulin project

A PROJECT to increase prescribing of human insulin for type 2 diabetes patients, so releasing funds to redesign services, has been shortlisted for a National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence Shared Learning Award. One of the big achievements of the Northamptonshire project, run by Nene and Corby Clinical Commissioning Groups, is the establishment of a community-based multidisciplinary team to link primary and secondary care, and provide specialist care for patients outside hospitals. The funding for this team resulted from savings made by increasing the use of human isophane insulin instead of insulin analogues - in line with NICE guidance.This was achieved following training sessions for practice nurses run by a medicines management pharmacist and a diabetes specialist nurse.
