Standard offers for university courses are often raised in response to an increased number of applications. Although I agree with Joseph Bush (PJ, 18 March 2012, p340) that this strategy does decrease administrative load, there are other factors coming into play, such as the use of UC AS tariff scores as a parameter in university league tables and the perceived superiority of universities making higher offers in the eyes of students and their careers teachers.
