Suicide linked to illness not medicines

FLUOXETINE and venlafaxine decrease suicidal thoughts and behaviour in adults and the elderly and do not increase the risk in young people, according to a study published online in Archives of General Psychiatry (6 February 2012). Data have been published previously suggesting adults under the age of 25 years who take antidepressants are at increased risk of suicidal thoughts. The data presented in this study suggest that, for youths, the severity of depression is strongly related to suicide risk — which is greatest for youths at baseline — but no effect of treatment on suicide risk was found.
