As the new year dawned many of us will have resolved to make lifestyle changes to improve our health. This might involve adopting a healthy diet such as getting our "five-a-day", drinking less alcohol, eating less fat and joining a gym to shed a few pounds. Successive governments have encouraged us to adopt these changes for a healthier lifestyle. These are powerful messages, but where do they come from and how reliable is the evidence upon which they are based?
