Let's promote our skills, says new CPO for Wales

At the start of this month, Roger Walker took his post as chief pharmaceutical officer (CPO) for the Welsh Assembly Government - a first for the country, which previously had a chief adviser as its pharmaceutical lead. The change brings Wales in line with England and Scotland, which have both had CPOs for many years, and marks recognition of the role as the head of the profession in Wales.Professor Walker says the new role incorporates the previous advisory functions, with added responsibilities based around implementing policies that affect pharmacy practice (see Panel 1)."There's a huge raft [of responsibilities] that have been brought together in one post for the first time," he says. "The basis of the role is to facilitate and develop the contribution of pharmacy to healthcare."
