PROTECTION for whistleblowers will be enshrined in the NHS Constitution from early 2012, health secretary Andrew Lansley announced this week. Healthcare professionals will have a duty to report bad practice and mistreatment of patients receiving NHS care and be protected for doing so. In addition, the NHS Constitution will outline requirements for NHS organisations to support staff by ensuring their concerns are fully investigated and will "add clarity" around the existing legal right for staff to raise concerns about safety, malpractice or other wrong doing without suffering any detriment.
