Super success in academic pharmacy with a blockbuster discovery thrown in

Earlier this year Malcolm Stevens, emeritus professor at Nottingham University school of pharmacy, became the first academic pharmacist to be elected a fellow of the Royal Society, a title currently held by only 1,346 scientists worldwide. With the exception of a Nobel Prize there is no greater accolade for a scientist, said Professor Stevens, and his election serves as an acknowledgment of the important work done by academic pharmacists - work which, in Professor Stevens's case, included the discovery of the blockbuster antitumour agent temozolomide (see Panel below).
