Ayurveda is the oldest medical system in the world.Its origins can be traced as far back as 4500 BC,to four ancient books of knowledge,(the "Vedas")and it is still officially recognised by the government of India.1 The system continues to evolve in India,for example,and Ayurveda now includes modern diagnostic tests and new medicines are incorporated into the body of knowledge.In Europe,Australia and the US,interest in Ayurveda is increasing as patients look for a more holistic approach to health,and because Indians and Pakistanis often continue to use their own traditional remedies while living abroad.
