Even though Alfred Nobel established his prizes for work that has conferred the greatest benefit to humanity during the preceding year, this year's medicine and physiology award goes to research into how specific cells in the brain encode geographical space—an avenue of research with presently no direct medical application, which has been ongoing for four decades. This year's prize goes to |phn O'Keefe of University College London, UK, and to husband-and-wife team May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, who were once post-docs in O'Keefe's laboratory.
