In their meta-analysis, the Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists' Collaboration1 conclude that the use of cardiovascular risk equations to guide blood pressure-lowering treatment decisions is likely to be more cost effective than a blood pressure-based approach. This conclusion might depend on the way that blood pressure is measured. In the trials included in their meta-analysis, treatment decisions were based on a small number of blood pressure readings. Conventional blood pressure measurements might both be inaccurate and imprecise, especially in young individuals with hypertension who were at low cardiovascular risk.
