Tamoxifen therapy for patients with breast cancer

The findings from the ATLAS trial demonstrate that extended use of adjuvant tamoxifen beyond 5 years is beneficial for women with oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer. However, since most postmenopausal women with ER-positive breast cancer now receive an aromatase inhibitor (Al) as adjuvant therapy, either from the start or after 2-5 years of tamoxifen, the ATLAS findings are mainly applicable to either women with functioning ovaries (for whom an Al is contraindicated) or postmenopausal women who cannot tolerate an Al.
