The global issue of kidney disease

A Series beginning in today's Lancet seeks to provide a global perspective on kidney disease. Kai-Uwe Eckardt and colleagues report on the global burden of kidney disease: they estimate that chronic kidney disease affects more than 10% of the world's population, a similar burden to diabetes. By contrast, Norbert Lameire and colleagues point out that the incidence and prevalence of acute kidney injury globally are still unknown, due to the use of different definitions.
