We congratulate Kenneth Cheung and colleagues on their study of the use of magnetically controlled growing rods in children with early-onset scoliosis. The economic issues put forward by Cheung and colleagues are of particular importance in the European Community, where this innovative device has been commercially available since it received the CE mark in September, 2010. Price differentials in France between magnetically controlled growing rods and traditional growing rods are particularly pronounced: unit costs are respectively about ?26000 (US$34174) and ?1000 ($1314).
