Congratulations to Hans Rosling. He made Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World last week. He has done more than anyone to make global health science intelligible to people in power. But he is much more than an entertaining and energetic educator. His messages-for example, that we live in one world, and categorising that world as developing or developed is misleadingly and damagingly simplistic-are of serious political importance. He calls himself a possiblist rather than an optimist. No President or Prime Minister should be without him. He swallows swords too.
