I have been Ombudsman for The Lancet, its three daughter journals (The Lancet Oncology, The Lancet Neurology, and The Lancet Infectious Diseases) and the website for 2 years. It is now time for my first report. Thankfully, there are not really enough complaints for a report every year, at least not complaints about governance and process rather than editorial policy which is up to The Lancet (as indeed it is up to the UK's Daily Mail, the Times of India, or the New York Times, and any other source of news and information). After all, you don't have to read material if the perceived or anticipated bias upsets you. That said, it is illuminating to be on the receiving end of lobbying groups, and abusive emails; one suggested that I personally was suffering from TWT (teeny weenie testes, if you didn't already know), and another wanted to see The Lancet "joining the ash heap of history". The best was "your country is doomed".
