China boosts medical research.

The Chinese New Year of the Tiger is set to be a good one for researchers in the country. The national Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) has recently announced plans to launch a medical research initiative, which some have labelled a Chinese National Institutes of Health (NIH).The Chinese Government plans to invest about 1 billion Renminbi (USDollars 150 million) in medical research in 2010. Applications will be peer reviewed by national and international experts, and the open competition for NSFC funding is expected to provide opportunities for young researchers. The hope is to harness advances in genetics and molecular biology to make China's medical research more competitive internationally.
