Quite often in Britain, one will hear doctors, with some justification, complain about the Royal Colleges. What are they for? Aren't they simply about knighthoods, golden robes, silver plates, and good claret? Self-aggrandisement mixed with spectacular vanity. Perhaps some Colleges are like this (one College puts an oil painting of its president on the stage at its annual meeting for lucky delegates to admire). But not the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Its annual gathering has no robes, no painting, and very little (as far as I could see) claret. The College uses its conference as an opportunity to bring a thousand paediatricians together, from the youngest trainees to the most emeritus of professors.
