Government policies affecting cotton production and trade have changed in several countries during 1995. Changes are the most significant in Turkey, the USA and Pakistan. Changes in policies affecting cotton exports and imports in Pakistan were discussed above. The changes tend to reduce government involvement in production and trade decisions. A tax on cotton exports was imposed in Turkey in January 1994 in response to rising domestic prices and concerns about the profitability of the domestic textile industry. The tax was reduced from 60 cents per kilogram to 20 cents per kilogram in early November 1995; an export quota of 50,000 tons per year was imposed.
