I am amazed at how often surgeons opt to chase after uninfected old balloons and reservoirs during revision implant surgery. Why bother? Aside from the tedious nature of the dissection, the potential exists for troublesome vascular and/or abdominal complications during the deep pelvic dissection. This study documents an infection rate of only 1.8% among 55 patients having the old reservoir/balloon emptied and left behind-a rate virtually identical to the 1.5% infection rate among 390 virgin implant cases.
