Risk factors for lower impact genital urinary injuries in children occur in approximately 30,000 children each year. To better understand the etiology of these injuries and facilitate recommendations in respect to possible preventive measures, Tasian et al (page 288) from San Francisco, California reviewed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. They evaluated all reported genital urinary injuries in children 18 years old or younger, who presented to emergency rooms from 2002 to 2010. The most common group affected were 4 to 7-year-old females. Straddle injuries from bicycles were the most common injury followed by injuries from climbing equipment, such as monkey bars and furniture. Interestingly, serious injuries from sports were relatively rare compared to the more common injuries from bicycles and climbing apparatus.
