摘要

Nosocomial infections present a significant problem in every day clinical life and pose a continuous challenge to health-care associated staff. The proportion of nosocomial infections involved in all complications of medical treatments is estimated to amount to approximately 50%. Urinary tract infections (UTI) are the most frequent nosocomial infections and most importantly appear with urinary tract catheters or procedures of the urinary tract. Due to these risk factors nosocomial UTI are found significantly frequent in urological patients. Therefore from 2003 on a global, international, multicentric prevalence study on nosocomial UTI was carried out by the European Society of Infection in Urology (ESIU), which is a section of the European Association of Urology (EAU) to surveil the nosocomial UTI rates specifically in Urology (Global Prevalence Study on Infections in Urology - GPIU-study). Annually since then approximately 100 hospitals participated at the GPIU study. Nosocomial UTIs are recorded using the published and internationally accepted criteria of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Since 2007 also surgical site infections are recorded. Furthermore data on antibiotic prophylaxis, treatment and indicator operations, such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) are surveilled. From 2003 up to now approximately 20,000 patients were screened, of those approximately 1,800 had a nosocomial associated UTI (prevalence in the different years approximately 10%). Between 30 to 40% of the nosocomial UTIs were more severe infections such as pyelonephritis and urosepsis.
