Re: Waist circumference is an independent risk factor for prostatic hyperplasia in Taiwanese males

Obesity is now recognized as a major risk factor for various urological disorders, including male and female lower urinary tract symptoms, overactive bladder and late onset hypogonadism. Fast foods and decreased exercise are among the associated causes of this epidemic.Although noted in the United States and Western Europe, this phenomenon is increasingly being reported in Asia. Debate remains about the best proxy for assessing obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have used body mass index for the last 2 decades. However, other studies use waist or neck circumference as a measure of obesity. Our group reported the use of WC and its high correlation with various parameters of male voiding dysfunction, including prostate volume.1 This report on 539 Taiwanese men with a mean WC of 90.81 cm (about 35 inches), prostate volume of 26.4 ml and BMI of 25.3 kg/m2 demonstrates that the combination of BMI greater than 24 kg/m2 and WC 90 cm or greater is an independent risk factor for prostatic hyperplasia. The bottom line is that urologists should be keenly aware of the association between obesity and various types of urological disorders, and should be screening for voiding and sexual dysfunction in this group of men
