Nearly 30% of patients with renal cell cancer (RCC) present with metastatic disease. While surgical excision is the gold standard for the treatment of organ confined RCC and strongly recommended for locally advanced disease, the benefits of surgery for metastatic disease are not as clearly defined, mainly accruing to a select subset of patients.
