摘要

The British Colonial Government introduced cotton into Uganda in 1903 as the first cash crop of the country. While production was carried out in Uganda by small-scale farmers, ginning was done in Kenya and the lint was then exported to Liverpool to service the British textile mills. Production rose steadily to 8,100 tons in 1920. The private sector, mainly of India origin, established ginneries across the country and took over processing and marketing while the government retained the research, seedbreeding, extension services, input supply and quality control functions. In addition, the government established three textile mills and one spinning mill in the late 1950s to add value to lint and absorb the increasing production. By 1960/61, cotton production increased to 69,000 tons.
