Nickel has continued to underperform the rest of the base metals complex with the cash official price recently having plummeted to $15,400/t, a level last seen when metal prices were gradually recovering from the 2008/09 downturn. The weakness in large part continues to be due to the ongoing deterioration in the global economy, weighed down in particular by debt-laden Europe but now increasingly also China.
