Wieland-Werke is planning to start short-time working for approximately 1,200 employees, effective from January 2009. The German copper semis manufacturer will-apply this to1,100 staff in its copper hot rolling mill and products pressing plant at Yoehringen and to 165 at its Ulm plant. There are 2,500 and 1,200 staff employed in the two plants, respectively. The decision is attributed to weakening market demand and declining order intake. Wieland-Werke produces 400,000 tonnes of copper semis in Germany and 100,000 in the US and Singapore. The effects of short-time working on output volume have not been specified.
