With a year-on-year 8.9 percent increase in real GDP and a 9.9 percent increase in industrial production last year, the Indian economy is the second fastest growing in the world, just behind China. Despite a modest negative impact from the US slowdown, India is resilient and still expecting 7.8 percent growth in real GDP this year. India's copper consumption provisionally rose by a significant 37 percent in 2007 to 545,000 tonnes, with construction and the electrical utility sector the main drivers.
