Rio Tinto halts operations at Gove alumina refinery

MINING giant Rio Tinto is suspending alumina production at its Gove refinery, putting more than 1,500 jobs at the site under threat. The company says that the Northern Territory-based refinery "is no longer a viable business in the current market environment." Instead it will focus on its bauxite operations on the same site, which currently employs around 350 people.
