GIVEN all the doom and gloom scenarios beforehand, from gross shortfalls in security staff to travel chaos in London, the 17 days of the London 2012 Olympics turned out by popular acclaim to be a series of amazing triumphs. It was a triumph for athletes and sporting achievement, for smooth organisation and logistics, for goodwill and friendliness amongst athletes and spectators alike - and, yes, a triumph for engineering.
