London - South African coal miner Petmin said late Friday that contract employees working at the company's wholly owned subsidiary Tendele Coal Mining's Somkhele anthracite mine in KwaZulu-Natal have declared strike action. This is the second recent walkout in a South African coal mine after workers at Coal of Africa's 6,000 mt/d Mooiplaats thermal coal mine in Mpumalanga province decided to go on strike over pay Tuesday. Petromin said that 345 workers from opencast contrac- tor Sandton Plant Hire (SPH) went on an "unprotected strike as contemplated in Section 68 of the South African Labour Relations Act, 66 of 1995" after a court interdict obtained by the contractor declared the strike illegal.
