US spot styrene fell 0.35 cent on the week to a Friday assessment at 57.15 cents/lb FOB USG as fundamentals remained consistent but the market was in backwardation. Sources called demand average with demand in downstream polystyrene healthy and demand in the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene market characterized as normal. Arbitrage opportunities to Europe and Asia existed, but sources said spot availability remained scarce through July. A July deal was done this week at 56.25 cents/lb ($1,240/mt) FOB USG for 5,000 mt. Due to the lack of available spot supply, activity in the spot market remained quiet this week, sources said. European spot styrene was assessed for July at $1,325/mt FOB ARA Friday, stable on the week.
