US spot paraxylene assessments rose $20/mt this week, assessed Friday at $875/mt FOB USG, tracking Asian paraxylene prices. Asian paraxylene rose $22/mt this week, assessed Friday at $916/mt FOB Korea and $937/mt CFR Taiwan/China. Supply and demand was balanced and market activity was quiet, sources said. There was some buying interest on the East coast, sources added. In downstream markets, demand was good as the summer bottling season was ongoing, however this hadn’t impacted paraxylene demand just yet as PTA supply was available for those downstream uses, sources said. Paraxylene production economics were unattractive with the MX-PX spread at minus-$43/mt.
