Market sources were expecting May US linear low density polyethylene contracts to settle flat, saying current conditions did not warrant the 4 cents/lb increases that are currently being sought by producers. Despite several planned and unplanned production turnarounds at US ethylene plants, spot ethylene prices have dropped 5.5 cents/lb over the past week, and sources noted that the lower spot prices for the LLDPE feedstock would make it increasingly difficult to justify raising contract prices.
