Washington—The Obama administration on Wednesday announced new steps to reduce emissions of methane and other pollutants from the oil and gas industry, setting a goal of cutting methane emissions 40-45% from 2012 levels by 2025. Among a suite of proposals, the US Environmental Protection Agency will put forth new standards to reduce emissions of methane and volatile organic compounds from new and modified sources within gas and oil production, gas processing and other sectors. EPA said in a statement it plans to issue a proposal this summer and is examining a range of options to reduce emissions, including potentially targeting emissions from compressor stations, requiring completions of fracked oil wells and reducing leaks.
