US lease sale expected to be modest

Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 233 doesn’t appear headed for any record books, even with oil flying high at over $100/b and prospect-hungry upstream operators hankering for more acreage in the area, veteran sale observers said Friday. Instead, it’s likely the upcoming sale, to be held August 28 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, could be more modest— potentially in line with last year’s Western sale which captured just under $134 million, John Rodi, Regional Gulf Director for the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the federal sale sponsor, told Platts in a phone interview.
