London—BP and Statoil were rocked on January 16 by the shock attack by Islamist militants on their jointly operated In Amenas gas field site in eastern Algeria. In a rare attack on Algeria’s energy sector, the militants, said to be loyal to al-Qaeda and reacting to the French-backed offensive against jihadists in neighboring Mali, took over 40 hostages and killed two people, including one Briton.
