Total starts up Usan oil field offshore Nigeria

London-France's Total said February 24 it has started production at the giant Usan oil field in the deepwater offshore Nigeria with output expected to ramp up to its first plateau of 180,000 b/d within around five months. Usan, located some 100 km (62 miles) off Nigeria in water depths of 750-850 meters, is Total's second major new oil field to come online offshore Nigeria in the past three years after the startup of the Akpo field. "It's difficult to say what the rate is right now as we're right at the beginning of produc- tion," Total's head of African exploration and production, Jacques Marraud des Grottes, told Platts in an interview February 24. "We started late last night," he added.
