Colombian biofuels sector battered by floods

Bogota-Colombia's ethanol producers lost $29 million last month due to heavy flooding that inundated sugarcane fields, impeded access of harvesting equipment and forced shutdowns of the nation's six biofuels plants for most of December. Undaunted, the industry plans to nearly double its output in the next two years to more than 1.9 million liters/day, with the expansion of existing plants this year and construction of two new ethanol factories set to come on line in 2013. Ethanol investment in the country over the next two years is planned to top $750 million.
