When the lobbying group for top US airlines recently caught wind that some in the US Air Force were questioning research dollars for renewable jet fuels, the news jolted John Heimlich, chief economist for the Air Transport Association. "There was some high-level concern or skepticism about the fuel approvals program in the austere budget atmosphere, especially with pathways not approved," Heimlich said recently at an advanced biofuels conference in Washington. "My God, without the Air Force's research labs and certification office, we wouldn't be close to where...we are today."
