Environmental group sues BP, Transocean for Gulf spill

Washington—An environmental group is seeking civil penalties of as much as $19 billion from BP and Transocean under the Clean Water Act for the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The Center for Biological Diversity filed the lawsuit June 18 in federal court in Louisiana, charging that BP and Transocean were in vio- lation of the law for releasing toxic pollutants into the Gulf without a permit.
