Karachi, Pakistan-BP's sale of its oil and gas assets in Pakistan has hit a snag after a local political heavyweight filed a case with the country's Supreme Court asking it to stop the sales process as state-owned com- panies might end up buying them back at a far higher price than what BP paid the gov- ernment in 2002. Qazi Hussain Ahmed, a former chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, is seeking reasons why the two state-owned companies-Oil and Gas Development Company Limited and Pakistan Petroleum Limited-are trying to buy BP's assets that were sold by the government to BP in 2002 at what he calls a "throwaway" price, a Supreme Court official said December 8 on condition of anonimity.
